If you’ve never climbed one of Colorado’s 54 peaks that are above 14,000 feet, Handies Peak is one of the easiest…but also one of the most scenic due to its unique location at the center of the huge, bowl-shaped San Juan Mountains. The day starts with a jeep tour past the Animas Forks ghost town, over 12,600 foot Cinnamon Pass, and down into the unusually scenic (especially during wildflower season) American Basin. Hike past a beautiful alpine lake surrounded by rugged spires until reaching the “sea-of-peaks” panoramas of the summit ridge. Because the trail starts so high and climbs so gently, a minimally fit person can usually do the round-trip hike in less than 5 hours (including children) before jeeping back to Silverton in time for dinner.
