About

This high, exposed traverse across the classic face of Galena Peak is perhaps the finest hike in Colorado that can be enjoyed by visitors with a minimal level of fitness…and no fear of heights! It’s a true adventure (even for families with older, adventurous children) that starts with a 4WD tour to an unmarked trailhead above tree line. The narrow but gently rising trail has one short, steep section as you move across steep tundra, cliffs, and spires toward the single-most impressive mining ruin in the Rocky Mountains. Not only is the exposed but relatively easy trail one of the most exciting you will ever hike outside of the European Alps, it also offers outstanding views of the Grenadiers – a quartzsite subrange of hidden peaks which are arguably the most spectacular in Colorado, but cannot be properly viewed from any road. Because this very special trail does not appear in any hiking guidebooks and requires 4WD access, you’re almost guaranteed to have it all to yourself. This is a safe hike during afternoon lightning danger.
