San Juan Backcountry is offering a once in a lifetime experience for enjoying the beautiful rugged San Juan Mountains. You talk about something to fill a BUCKET LIST – this is it:
For 3 nights and 3 days, San Juan Backcountry will furnish an adventure on ATV’s (single) UTV’s (side-by-side) or 2-up ATV’s through some of the most remote beautiful rugged country in America. Everything will be furnished (except you); machines, food, water, lodging, etc. Come prepared to see great landscapes, rugged mountain terrain, waterfalls, old mines, old mills, tram towers, ghost towns, wildflowers (in season), and often times, wildlife. The roads we will tour are old Ute Indian trails, mining roads, old supply routes, all from the 1800’s until now.
Our experienced guides will tell you of the history of the San Juan area, and stop for pictures, snacks, and talks along the way. Each guide is experienced with the trails and history. Each day will be filled with excitement and a full day of riding. The sights and views you will see are unbelievable and breath taking.
For the full San Juan Backcountry experience, we recommend our total package which allows you to add a round trip train ride and an overnight stay to any of our offerings! Please call for details.

Itinerary
-
We will kick off your adventure of a lifetime with a morning meet and greet at San Juan Backcountry Headquarters with a brief overview of trip itinerary, vehicle operation and to answer any questions you may have. We will enjoy coffee and pastries before getting loaded on our ATV’s to set out on your magnificent journey.
Our first day of riding we will start our adventure going through some of the most beautiful country you have ever seen. We will tackle our most moderate route to “ease” you into this great adventure. As the difficulty progresses so will your appetite, so we will stop for a wonderful picnic lunch at our notorious ghost town Animas Forks. After you explore the historic buildings allowing your food to digest before you get back on your ATV roller coaster to tackle the first part of the Alpine loop, Engineer Pass.
For the campers, we will conclude the day halfway around the Alpine loop where we will break for camp on Cinnamon pass. Dinner will be your traditional all American trail meal: steaks, potatoes, beans and rolls around the campfire, under the brightest stars you have ever seen!
For the hotel-goers, we will conclude the day with a drive into Lake City to our sweet little cabins by the river where a wonderful catered dinner and the best showers you have ever felt await you.
-
we rise for the adventurers breakfast consisting of breakfast. We then hit the open trail completing the alpine loop, stopping and gazing in on a beautiful 14,000 ft peak, as we head over gorgeous peaks, rivers, and amazing turquoise lakes! At some point on the trail when hunger hits we will take a rest to delight in your daily nutrients and take a short time to explore all of the outrageous rocks we have in our area.
For the campers, we will conclude our day at the former mining site Ironton, where we break for day two of camping. We will dive into a dinner of great American burgers, brats, potato salad and chips. Gold not guaranteed at this site but for the explorer in you….it is close by!
For the hotel-goers, as we conclude our riding we end up on the Million Dollar Highway where we will catch a shuttle into the quaint little town of Ouray for dinner, hot springs, shower and a comfy bed!!!! Need I say more?!
-
We awake to the best breakfast a cowboy of ATV’s could ask for! We then head to our favorite pass, which is also your day that you will be getting higher than ever! This pass takes you over 13,000 ft with the most challenging riding and greatest views to date! We pass one of the few last active mines in southwest Colorado, as we make a lifetime of memories that one will never forget. Our day concludes with dinner, ride awards, hotels and glorious showers back in the amazing Silverton.
