No trip to Durango is complete without a float down the Lower Animas. This fun and convenient trip is perfect for large groups, families, and suitable for children 4 y/o and up. The Lower Animas starts on the North end of Durango near 32nd St and finishes 5-10 miles down stream depending on which trip you choose and the time of year. There are small class II rapids throughout the trip with the biggest rapid being located at Santa Rita Park known as Smelter. At high water Smelter has some big crashing waves and we will sometimes need to walk the small children in your group around this one depending on how high the water is. After Smelter the river returns back into is natural river bed where you’ll enjoy continuous small rapids through towering cottonwoods and lush riparian vegetation.
Please arrive at 4Corners Riversports (360 South Camino Del Rio, Durango, CO 81301) at least 15 min prior to the departure of your trip. 4Corners is located just south of downtown Durango on the frontage road adjacent to Hwy 550. We are next to Big 5 Sporting Goods and across the hwy from Office Depot. Please park behind the shop where your check-in and orientation will take place.
Dress to get splashed but most likely you wont get soaking wet, unless you want to jump into the river. We also recommend bringing a hat, sun glasses, water bottle and lathering on the sunscreen. You’re welcome to wear your own water shoes or you can rent ours for $5. We do not allow flip-flops on any of our raft trips.
You can also add on rafting to the same day, the day before, or the day after any backcountry tour.
For the full San Juan Backcountry experience, we recommend our total package which allows you to add a round trip train ride and an overnight stay to any of our offerings for just $200! Please call for details.
